Contacts Model

PING8 organizes campaign audiences through groups, subscribers, tags, status, and suppression.

Objects

ObjectWhat it does
GroupThe primary list you send campaigns to.
SubscriberA person or email address inside a group.
TagAn internal label for targeting, segmentation, or workflow state.
StatusWhether a subscriber can receive mail, such as subscribed or unsubscribed.
SuppressionA safety rule that prevents sending to a recipient.
Subscription formA public way for people to join a group.

Groups vs tags

Use groups for major audience boundaries:

  • Newsletter subscribers.
  • Trial users.
  • Customers.
  • Event attendees.
  • Client-specific lists.

Use tags for targeting inside groups:

  • vip
  • trial-expiring
  • webinar-2026
  • inactive-90-days
  • region-eu

Segmenting campaigns

When creating a campaign:

  1. Select a group.
  2. Add tags if you need a narrower audience.
  3. Choose tag logic:
    • OR sends to subscribers with any selected tag.
    • AND sends only to subscribers with all selected tags.
  4. Confirm the recipient count before testing.

Common mistakes

  • Using separate groups for every small targeting idea instead of tags.
  • Importing unpermissioned lists.
  • Forgetting that unsubscribed or suppressed recipients should not receive campaign mail.
  • Sending before confirming the group count and tag logic.
